The lateral arcuate ligament is a thickening of the anterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia deep to the quadratus lumborum muscle at the level of L1. It arises from the anterolateral part of the transverse processes of L1 and laterally extends to the 12th rib.
Muscle fibres pass from this origin anterosuperiorly into the central tendinous part of the diaphragm.
