Primary biliary cirrhosis is thought to be an autoimmune disorder marked by chronic inflammation of the intrahepatic bile ducts. It may be referred to as destructive sclerosing cholangitis or cholangiolitis. By contrast, secondary biliary cirrhosis usually results from obstruction of the extrahepatic ducts.
