The uterus is connected to the vagina via the cervix. It is a thick muscular organ that is lined by endometrium. The uterus is supported by thick ligaments (principally the uterosacral ligaments and the transverse cervical ligament) and peritoneum is draped over it. The rectovaginal pouch (pouch of Douglas) lies between the uterus and the rectum. The broad ligaments are folds of peritoneum within which lie the Fallopian tubes.
