The sternum originates in the lateral plate mesoderm that provides the pectoral muscles. The migrating cells are organised as bands and fuse by the tenth week. Rarely, the sternal bars do not join leaving a defect.

Three types of sternal fissure may occur - superior sternal, complete and distal sternal.
