Often liver disease is asymptomatic until it is advanced.

Acute hepatitis may cause:

  • anorexia
  • nausea and vomiting
  • intolerance of food, alcohol and cigarette smoke
  • skin itch
  • right upper quadrant pain

Once jaundice appears, other symptoms may regress.

As the liver fails the patient may notice:

  • peripheral swelling
  • abdominal bloating
  • bruising
  • vomiting of blood
  • confusion and somnolence
