The following factors have been implicated as possible risk factors for actinomycosis infection:

  • age 20-60 years
  • male sex (except for pelvic actinomycosis, which mainly affects women)
  • diabetes
  • immunosuppression
    • steroids
    • bisphosphonates
    • leukaemia with chemotherapy
    • HIV
    • lung and renal transplant receipients
    • alcoholism
