This is a single contrast radiological technique used primarily to assess the functional and anatomical properties of the oesophagus.
Liquid barium is swallowed in an upright and prone position and radiographs are taken during the oesophageal phase of transit.
Regurgitation of the gastric contents may be subsequently be assessed by taking radiographs with the patient head down.
Bread soaked in the barium suspension may be used in the radiological investigation of dysphagia.
