Molybdenum is a trace, essential mineral that is present in vegetables grown in molybdenum-rich soil.

It is required for the activity of a number of enzymes including xanthine oxidase which degrades purines.

It is absorbed in the intestine and excreted in urine and bile.

Molybdenum deficiency is extremely rare.
