During pregnancy there is an increase in bowel transit time during the first and second trimesters. The bowel transit time returns to pre-pregnant levels in the third trimester.

Constipation occurs in about 11-38% of pregnancies.

Women should be advised to increase dietary fibre in the form of bran or wheat fibre and to ensure an adequate fluid intake.
