A Meckel's diverticulum is a persistence of a segment of vitello-intestinal duct which retains its communication with the ileum. It is situated 60 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction and averages 5 cm in length. It may contain ectopic pancreatic or gastric mucosal tissue or both. It is present in 2% of the population, more commonly, males.
