The initial immune response depends upon three types of cell:

  • antigen presenting cells (APCs)
  • lymphocytes:
    • thymus-derived - T cells
    • bone marrow-derived - B cells; although the B refers historically to the fact that in chicks they mature in the bursa of Fabrica
