In cases of antepartum haemorrhage, ultrasonography is helpful in the diagnosis of placenta praevia.
Results must be interpreted with care because a low lying placenta found late in the second trimester may ascend following the formation of the lower segment of the uterus.
A large retroplacental clot may be visible in cases of abruptio placentae.
