Pre-hepatic
Portal vein occlusion is the second most common cause of portal vein hypertension in the UK. The principal causes are:
- portal vein thrombosis - most common
- splenic vein thrombosis - rare
- congenital atresia or stenosis
- extrinsic compression by lymphadenopathy - e.g. lymphoma, carcinoma
