Arteriolosclerosis refers to the thickening of arterioles, particularly related to systemic arterial hypertension.

It occurs in two varieties:

  • hyaline, which is seen most commonly in essential hypertension but is also a feature of old age and diabetes mellitus
  • hyperplastic, which is related to severe hypertension
