The main goal of treatment is to cardiovert to sinus rhythm. Prioritise identification and treatment of any underlying cause as in about 60% of patients, atrial flutter occurs as part of an acute medical illness, and will resolve when this is treated (1)

If sinus rhythm is not achieved then the rate of ventricular response should be controlled.
