This drugs is a derivative of glycyrrhizinic acid, a natural constituent of liquorice.

Carbenoxalone may have a role in the treatment of gastric ulceration, although other drugs are preferable.

Carbenoxalone intoxication, or excessive use of liquorice results in a pseudo-Conn's syndrome:

  • sodium and water retention
  • hypokalaemia
  • hypertension
