Procedure

The carotid arteries are clamped and the carotid bifurcation opened longitudinally. Cerebral perfusion is maintained by a Javed Shunt - this involves placing a tube in the common carotid artery below the stenosis and then into the internal carotid artery above the stenosis. A substitute, parallel flow is thus formed. The stenotic plaque is then removed from the carotid artery. The carotid artery is then sutured directly or with a patch in the wall to maintain the diameter.
