Aetiology

The aetiology of this condition is not known.

Postulated theories include:

  • impact of abnormal gastrointestinal motility and pain signals from sensitised pathways in the gut viscera
  • imbalance of the intestinal microbiota (insufficient lactobacilli and increased coliform bacteria) influences gut motor function and gas production, which subsequently contributes to the condition
  • behavioural issues e.g - family tension, parental anxiety, or inadequate parent-infant interaction
  • intolerance to cow's milk protein or lactose (1,2)

The following factors are thought to be associated with the development of infantile colic:

  • maternal smoking
  • increased maternal age
  • firstborn status (1)
