Histopathology
The histopathological features of mitral valve prolapse include:
- an increase in the zona spongiosa of the valve leaflets
- secondary changes:
- formation of thrombus in the angle between the left atrial wall and prolapsing leaflet
- endocardial fibrosis and thickening where the valve leaflet slaps against the myocardium
