Indications for a temporary pacemaker

Possible indications include:

  • a symptomatic bradycardia that is not controllable by drugs
  • in order to suppress drug-resistant ventricular tachycardia or supraventricular tachycardia
  • the onset of acute conduction disturbances:
    • after an anterior myocardial infarction (MI), a pacemaker may be given prophylactically to prevent bi- or tri-fascicular block or second or third degree AV block
    • in the case of an inferior MI, a pacemaker is only indicated if these conduction disturbances are present
