Associated structural defects
In 85-90% of patients, the patent ductus arteriosus is the only defect.
In the remainder there can be:
- ventricular septal defect
- coarctation
- pulmonary or aortic stenosis
In heart disease which restricts pulmonary blood flow, the patency of the ductus is essential for life. Such conditions include:
- pulmonary valve atresia
- transposition of the great arteries
