Prevention of hepatic encephalopathy

Oesophageal bleeds may precipitate acute hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease. The risk of encephalopathy is reduced by:

  • neomycin:
    • 250-1000 mg orally four time per day
    • reduces the bacterial fauna of the gut

  • lactulose:
    • 30-90 ml three times per day
