Inspection
Always take time to inspect the praecordium for anything unusual.
Pay particular attention to:
- scars, for example:
- the midline scar of a sternotomy
- the left lateral scar of a mitral valvotomy
- deformity
- pacemaker
- visible apex beat or other pulsation
