Ticlopidine

Authoring team

Ticlopidine has been discontinued due to severe and life-threatening blood and bone marrow side effects, combined with the availability of safer, better-tolerated alternatives like clopidogrel.

This drug acted by blocking the platelet ADP receptor, which promotes aggregation when activated. It had previously been used in the UK, in combination with aspirin, to prevent thrombosis with coronary stents.
