Butterfly rash

Authoring team

This is the characteristic skin lesion of systemic lupus erythematosus. Erythema occurs in a butterfly distribution on the cheeks of the face and across the bridge of the nose. Frequently precipitated by sun exposure (UVB is the usual precipitant; UVA may exacerbate SLE). May precede SLE by weeks or months.

The rash heals without blemish (1).
