Cellulitis of the hand may be primary or the first manifestation of a range of deeper hand infections e.g. deep palmar space infections. The most common organism is Streptococcus spp.
The hand shows swelling and erythema. It is tender to palpation. Lymphangitis may be seen proximally.
Investigations should include radiography to rule out osteomyelitis.
Intravenous antibiotics are mandatory.
