Eye and skin infections
A keratoconjunctivitis may develop as the the result of a Herpes simplex infection. The condition may cause severe oedema of the eyelids and dendritic ulcers of the cornea.
A primary skin infection is more often seen in older children. The infection may occur at a site of trauma. Eczema herpeticum may occur in children with pre-existing eczema.
Diagnosis is based on the characteristic vesicular lesions and is confirmed by culture of the vesicular fluid or microscopic examination of scrapings for inclusion bodies.
Idoxyuridine used topically may be a partially effective treatment.
