Non-operative management

Authoring team

The nonoperative treatment of hypoplastic thumb is reserved for patients with the mildest form of hypoplasia (type 1 in the Blauth classification). In this group, there is a good pinch strength and grasp with little functional debility. Rarely, the more severe phenotypes within this group may benefit from splinting of the metacarpophalangeal joint if mild thumb laxity is a problem, or thenar muscle strengthening exercises.
