Pentoxifylline in venous leg ulcers

• pentoxifylline is believed to increase microcirculatory blood flow although the exact mechanism of action is unknown
• medications with potential interactions with pentoxfylline include non-steroidal antiinflammatorys (NSAIDS). Details of interactions and contraindications can be found in the British National Formulary
• use of pentoxifylline in the treatment of venous leg ulcers is an unlicensed indication
  
  
• use of pentoxifylline (400 mg three times daily for up to six months) to improve healing should be considered in patients with venous leg ulcer (1)
