Most long term studies comprise patients attending hospital clinics so that results are biased to more severe disease. Permanent remission occurs in 10% of patients. Acute guttate psoriasis is often self limiting but in 70% of cases, it proceeds to chronic plaque disease.

Generalised pustular and erythrodermic psoriasis have a poor prognosis.
