Indications for specialist referral

A specialist should be consulted in the following situations:

  • in case where the diagnosis is in doubt
  • widespread hair loss, including alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis
  • in pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • if secondary care treatments are more appropriate
  • when topical treatment started in primary care is not effective
  • if a wig is required
