Side effects
Side effects include:
- hypoglycaemia is the most common side effect and may be prolonged, especially in those with impaired renal function. The risk is greatest with the long-acting sulphonylureas such as glibenclamide and chlorpropamide
- hyponatraemia is a problem with chlorpropamide which can increase the sensitivity of the renal tubules to ADH
- weight gain secondary to reduced glucose losses in the urine
- gastrointestinal disturbance
- headache
Sensitivity reactions include:
- transient rashes which may progress to erythema multiforme and exfoliative dermatitis
- fever
- jaundice
- haematological disturbances including aplastic anaemia
- facial flushing may be associated with chlorpropamide
