  • sanguinous
  • purulent

Always take a bacteriological swab of an ulcer.

If the ulcer is covered by a scab (dried discharge) then this may cover the base, edge or discharge of the ulcer. In this situation it may be appropriate to remove the scab to facilitate proper examination of the ulcer.
