Late postoperative complications
- hypoparathyroidism occurs in about 1% of patients
- unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve damage - note that bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve damage presents as laryngeal obstruction. Unilateral damage presents with a hoarse voice.
- superior laryngeal nerve damage - presents as change in voice quality
