Treatment
There are three important principles:
- delinquency is a common and self limiting condition, and thus intervention should be limited to those with persistent problems - the identification of whom is important
- labelling is detrimental and leads to increased delinquency, thus:
- a police caution is better than a formal charge
- court appearances should be avoided
- most delinquents do not have a psychiatric disorder, and so the most appropriate intervention should involve legal, social, educational and enviromental measures
- the psychiatrist may be asked to asses for psychiatric disorder and advise probation and social services, the courts and education how to help the family
