delinquency is a common and self limiting condition, and thus intervention should be limited to those with persistent problems - the identification of whom is important
labelling is detrimental and leads to increased delinquency, thus:
a police caution is better than a formal charge
court appearances should be avoided
most delinquents do not have a psychiatric disorder, and so the most appropriate intervention should involve legal, social, educational and enviromental measures
the psychiatrist may be asked to asses for psychiatric disorder and advise probation and social services, the courts and education how to help the family
