Aetiology of diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus may be primary or secondary.
Primary diabetes can be divided into:
- insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)
- non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) a subset of NIDDM with unique features
