Clinical features
- usually occurs in adults
- idiopathic cases (the vast majority) typically affect adults between 30 and 50 years old (males more than females)

- presentation:
- proteinuria or nephrotic syndrome (80%)
- hypertension (10-50%) seems to depend on the amount of renal damage
- haematuria is rare
- features of underlying cause e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis B infection, drug history (e.g. penicillamine, gold)
- 70% of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy have a complete or partial spontaneous remission of nephrotic syndrome with stabilisation of renal function
