Hyperparathyroidism (secondary)
Secondary hyperparathyroidism refers to hyperplasia of all four parathyroid glands secondary to prolonged hypocalcaemia or hyperphosphataemia.
It is a normal homeostatic response and is the most common form of hyperparathyroidism.
Serum calcium levels are replenished from skeletal stores, and by increasing both renal tubular reabsorption and gut absorption of calcium.
