Patients at risk of hyponatraemia

The following patients are at an increased risk of developing hyponatraemia:

  • post operative patients
  • alcoholics
  • malnourished patients
  • psychiatric polydipsic patients
  • the elderly - caused by a combination of chronic disease and concurrent use of certain medication
  • hypovolaemic patients
  • burns patients
