Paragangliomas range from 1 to 6 cms in size and are usually encapsulated in fibrous tissue. These tumours are often quite adherent to surrounding structures and may be difficult to excise.

Histologically tumour cells often contain many secretory granules and may appear to be obviously anaplastic.
