Investigations of suspected prolactinoma

Authoring team

The investigation of a suspected prolactinoma might include:

  • prolactin level - at least two readings taken on separate occasions from an unstressed patient are necessary. A level greater than 5000 mu per litre is diagnostic.
  • dynamic tests - TRH, domperidone and metoclopramide are useful when prolactin levels are moderately elevated
  • MRI is preferable to CT
  • assessment of pituitary function - low FSH/LH
