Cellular energy

Authoring team

Glucogenesis is undesirable when a cell has low nucleotide phosphate energy reserves. Hence, to limit gluconeogenesis, an elevated concentration of adenosine mono- or diphosphate relative to adenosine triphosphate acts to inhibit:

  • fructose biphosphatase
  • pyruvate carboxylase

Both of these enzymes are non-equilibrium and flux-generating. When their activity is reduced, glycolysis is the prefered route of substrate passage; this is reinforced by adenosine monophosphate activating 6-phosphofructokinase.
