Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism were at increased risk of fracture before surgery but not after:

  • relative risk (RR) before surgery was 1.8 (95% confidence 1.3 to 2.3)
  • RR after surgery was 1.0 (95% confidence 0.8 to 1.3)

Increased risk was seen for the following fractures:

  • vertebrae - RR 3.5
  • distal lower leg and ankle - RR 2.3
  • non-distal forearm - RR 4.0

Increased risk of fracture began about ten years before surgery.
