Aneurysm of the aortic root
Aortic root aneurysms are fusiform aneurysms of the proximal part of the ascending aorta. The aortic valve ring is often involved resulting in aortic regurgitation.
Histological features of aortic root aneurysms include;
- loss of elastic laminae
- smooth muscle atrophy
- accumulation of mucin within the media
Risk factors include;
- cystic medial necrosis
- Marfan's syndrome
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
