Aetilogy:

  • repeated attacks of acute sinusitis in which nasal allergy, vasomotor rhinitis and hormonal dysfunction have been excluded

Bacteriology:

  • mixed; streptococcus and anaerobes most common

Presentation:

  • similar to acute forms but less severe
  • frankly purulent or mucois postnasal or nasal discharge
  • nasal obstruction
  • headache
  • anosmia
  • constitutional upset - usually mild; malaise, loss of appetitie, sore throat, eustachian tube dysfunction

Treatment:

  • decongestants - oral if used long term
  • systemic antibiotics
