Swelling of the soft palate
The soft palate is initially swollen on one side due to cellulitis. At this stage Penicillin i.m. may forestall admission.
The swollen soft palate then goes on to form a unilateral abscess of the soft palate obscuring the affected tonsil and displacing the uvula.
