Fish bones or other sharp objects lodged in the tonsils or fauces may be removed with forceps under good light.

If the foreign body cannot be seen but there is a history suggesting one, refer if there is:

  • sharp pain on swallowing which may radiate to the ear
  • severe or worsening dysphagia or drooling
  • tenderness in the neck
  • fever
