Clinical features
The history for acute mediastinitis is one of a sudden onset of chills, fevers, apprehension and prostration.
On examination, the patient is tachypnoeic and tachycardic. There are signs of systemic toxicity and subcutaneous emphysema. Hamman's sign may be present.
