Subluxation or total avulsion of tooth

Authoring team

Refer the patient to an emergency dentist or an A/E dept. This is a specialist subject but the following points may be useful:

Follow the immediate treatment advice given above.

If a tooth has been subluxed from its socket:

  • push it back
  • use local anaesthetic if necessary

If a tooth has been knocked right out:

  • wash it in cool running water but don't touch the root
  • reimplant the tooth immediately if the tooth is clean and the procedure tolerated
  • store the tooth in milk as a transport medium if the tooth is still dirty or if the patient cannot tolerate the reimplantation procedure
