Results of surgery
- mortality rate depends upon tumour size and site - up to 5% for large tumours
- cause of death - damage to major blood vessels, e.g. anterior inferior cerebellar artery, postoperative cerebellar swelling
- morbidity - facial nerve usually preserved in small tumours i.e. less than 2 cm, and in 20% of those with large tumours
- difficulty in swallowing from X nerve damage is usually transient and needs no intervention
